For centuries Eastern health masters have used breath as a means of understanding health issues, focusing one’s own thoughts for introspection purposes, and as a road map for redirecting one’s course through life. In health today, breath is a primary diagnostic tool for a battery of ailments. Research scientists use breath or respiration as a major signpost in the studies of bioenergetics (how matter (food) and energy flow through the body).  The reason breath is such a functional component is that it is one of two constituents required to keep our internal combustion physiological metabolism running (fuel + O2 = energy processes).  There is a lot of emphasis given to what we eat but little placed on the other ingredient, oxygen. 

Everyone knows how anxiety, stress or fear itself impacts our breathing. To reverse this line of thinking, few understand how to use breathing to moderate or even alleviate anxiety, stress or fear. It’s one of those reversible equations we learned about in organic chemistry but never quite understood.  For example, when a person hyperventilates due to anxiety (anxiety attack), they only have to breathe into a bag to return to normal activity (they are actually re-breathing carbon dioxide that targets sensors in the respiratory loop, to shut down hyperventilation). This is what Denise does, by teaching breathing techniques she reverses the equation to reduce anxiety and stress, and enhances introspection and performance (and you thought I was going to say she will have you breathe into a bag! Nope, she doesn’t do that.).

One of the marvelous mechanisms of the human body is that each metabolic action has a range within which it can operate. The width of the range is controlled by genetics but where we operate within the range is determined by our interaction with the environment. Denise has often said that as a matter of routine we breathe at a level within the range that allows us to just survive.  Breath facilitation is a method that allows us to control where within the range we breathe to enhance our individual holistic health. The Master of breath work is Andy Caponigro, (“The Miracle of Breath: Mastering Fear, Healing Illness, and Experiencing the Divine”, 2005, 316 pp. New World Library, Novato, CA), himself a concert guitarist, and later he became known as the international “master of breath” when he began developing breath facilitation as a means to teach music to his students. Denise gained her training in breath facilitation under Andy Caponigro.
